Bed linens made with a specially developed fabric technology have received 510(k) clearance from the FDA as a Class I medical device for treating mild atopic dermatitis, the most common type of eczema. The new linens, developed by Precision Fabrics Group of Greensboro, NC, will be marketed under the DermaTherapy® trade name.

DermaTherapy linens are manufactured from specially developed fabric that consists of uniquely structured fibers designed to wick moisture away from the body, leaving the skin drier and more comfortable. The fabric also provides a smoother sleep surface, minimizing the friction and abrasion to the skin experienced with conventional bedding. DermaTherapy fabrics also have a durable antimicrobial treatment that helps eliminate bacteria that can aggravate skin irritations related to dermatitis.

According to Traci Broughton, product manager at DermaTherapy, the fabric technology used in the bedding has been clinically tested by the Department of Dermatology of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC.

In a study of patients with atopic dermatitis, DermaTherapy’s fabric technology was shown to provide a cleaner, drier, and smoother sleeping surface when compared with standard cotton bedding. The study results found significant improvements in the severity of atopic dermatitis, eczema, the level of itching, and the quality of life after 8 weeks of using the DermaTherapy bedding.
